The Erasmus + Programme Staff Mobility for Teaching promotes international mobility for teaching and training activities for university teaching staff at a Higher Education Institute of one of the countries participating in the Erasmus + Programme with the objectives of: offer teachers opportunities for updating and professional growth promote the exchange of skills and experiences on teaching methodologies

If you work in higher education, you can spend time teaching at an institution in an Erasmus+ Programme country.

Your institution must hold the Erasmus+ Charter for Higher Education.

Programme country HEIs have also the opportunity to invite staff from businesses or other organisations located in Programme countries to teach at their institution. Examples of such organisations include businesses, public bodies, social partners, research institutes and non-governmental organisations.

Before beginning your teaching period, you, your HEI and the receiving institution sign a Mobility Agreement. This document sets out your learning and teaching goals, rights and responsibilities and also how the teaching period will be recognised.

Teaching periods: this activity allows the teaching staff of higher education institutions to teach at a partner HEI abroad. Staff mobility for teaching can concern any subject area / academic discipline.

Training periods: this activity supports the professional development of the teaching and non-teaching staff of Higher Education Institutions in the form of training events abroad (excluding conferences) and observation periods in work situation / observation periods / training at a partner higher education institution, or other organization of interest abroad.

A period abroad may involve the association of teaching and training activities (combined mobility).

Duration

A teaching period between two Programme countries must last a minimum of 2 days and a maximum of 2 months. This excludes travelling time.

During your stay abroad, the teaching activity must comprise a minimum of 8 hours per week (or any shorter period of stay) of actual teaching time.

Combined mobility (training + teaching): from a minimum of 2 consecutive working days excluding travel days (maximum 2 days), with a minimum of 4 hours for teaching + 4 hours of training for each week of stay.

Financial support

EU grants provide a contribution to your costs for travel and subsistence during your time abroad and vary depending on:

The receiving country

The level of demand from staff from your country who intend to teach abroad

The distance between your country and the receiving country

Availability of other financial sources in your country or region

If your teaching period abroad is between Programme countries as higher education staff, your sending institution will be responsible for making all payments. If you come from a business or organisation, the HEI that invited you to teach takes care of the payments. 

How to apply

You apply for a grant via your higher education institution responding to a Call for Selection. HEIs select candidates for teaching periods abroad from their staff or invite staff from businesses or other organisations.

The selection of staff to teach abroad should be fair, transparent and well documented.

The member countries of the European Union (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Hungary);

The countries of the European Economic Area (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway);

The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Turkey and Serbia.
