UNICA-CLA placement tests

Students included in the ESSE3 lists and enrolled in the first year of a bachelor’s degree or single-cycle master’s degree will be summoned by the University of Cagliari Language Centre, in order to take a computer-based placement test in a single session.
Students’ level of proficiency is assessed by the testing activities.
Students who achieve the B1 or the B2 level taking the placement test, can take the oral test which is an additional testing to confirm the level in oral production and interaction.

They can access any speaking session available in the calendar year following the year of first enrolment.

The initial English language skill assessment must be finished within the calendar year following the year of first enrolment (ex.  A.Y. of enrolment 2024/25: within the calendar year 2025).
At the end of the available sessions, the level A1 will be assigned in case of non-participation in the tests, in order to direct towards the training course.

The missing conduct of the B1 or B2 level confirmation speaking test will result in the assignment of the level immediately below that of the one to confirm.
For further information, please see the UNICA-CLA English language project Vademecum (pg.14-15).

FAQ about the Placement test

Yes, you can if you provide the University of Cagliari Language Centre with:
- a certificate for level A2 (or above) issued by one of the following Certification Bodies (go to the page for details): Cambridge ESOL, IELTS, TOEFL, TRINITY ISE (Trinity GESE is not recognised), PEARSON (PT-Academic and General English), Oxford, Gatehouse and LanguageCert for no more than 5 (FIVE) years (i.e. issued within October 2016 for freshmen enrolled in the academic year 2021/2022)

- an English language exam (level A2 or above) passed during your current/previous university career, or if you declare your possession of level A1 of the CEFR.

Yes, you do. Even students who will take the TOLC English section must take the English language skills assessment placement test (computer-based test + eventual speaking test) organized by the University of Cagliari Language Centre within the “UNICA-CLA English language” Project.

We remind you that the TOLC English section cannot be used for the assignment of university credits.

Students will be notified of the outcomes via email. Their Badge will be sent via email to their university email address. Then, they will have to proceed with the downloading.
