Abstract:
"Five years ago, environmental health lawsuits were decided in Italy and in
Louisiana (U.S.) with decidedly different outcomes. These cases illuminate
national and cultural differences in the creation and dissemination of
scientific knowledge. The overall argument of the paper is that national
regulatory structures, legal systems, professional and non-professional
cultures, NGOs and labor unions all impact environmental knowledge-making as
well as the control of hazardous industries. In other words, while the
technologies, hazards, and pollution are the same in the U.S. and Italy, the
social and cultural landscape of the struggles and outcomes are quite
different."
