PhD course on “Emerging Trends in Agile and Lean Software Development”
Il Prof. Dr. Pekka Abrahamsson , University of Helsinki, Finland, Visiting professor at DIEE, Cagliari, Italy

1. Lecture: Tuesday 27.7.2010, 14:00 – 20:00
The business impact of agile software development: Case F-Secure, Nokia and Philips
Abstract: The talk presents three unpublished multi-year case studies on the adoption of agile software development methods in large and very large organizations. The results are presented in terms of concrete measurable business impact. By business impact we refer to development costs, time-tomarket impact and quality implications. The presentation shows the timeline for adoption as well as the strategy that was used to deploy agile solutions in different organizational cultures and development settings. Finally, the lessons-learned and emerging problems will be highlighted.
This talk explains the basics of agile software engineering and uses industrial data to explain the
rationale why these companies are pursuing to Lean development.
Several small group exercises will be held during the lecture hours.

2. Lecture: Wednesday 28.7.2010, 14:00 – 20:00
Lean Software Development and Trends
Abstract: The talk presents the novel trends underpinning lean software development. There are several concepts that explain the current aims. These include such a concepts as flow, Kanban, value, waste, set-based design and others. The talk seeks to provide definitions of these concepts and a set of practical examples as well. The examples are supported by small group exercises designed to amplify learning. Case studies from the Software Factory will be presented to provide an initial empirical understanding to the phenomena under scrutiny. Students and other participants are expected to gain a solid understanding on the basics of lean development and future prospects in the area.

3. Lecture: Thursday 29.7.2010, 14:00 – 20:00
The future of lean and agile software development – the next key words!

Abstract: Software has been driven by fads for decades now. 1980’s was dominated by object
orientation, 1990’s software process improvement shaped the way how software engineering was
perceived. Last decade was a show-room for agile methods. 2010’s has begun with a focus on lean
issues. What will happen in 2015-2020? This lecture takes a forward looking viewpoint, focuses on the characteristics of lean paradigm and attempts to make educated guesses about the future of software. While in the past, these predictions have rarely if ever succeeded, the aim is to provide means for such a reflection. The result can be called – Radical Software Engineering. The talk presents the thinking and rationale for such a viewpoint.
The Course is ended with a 1-hour written exam.
