Open to PhD students and early postdoctoral fellows. Participants should bring an idea or a draft of a manuscript they are planning,
or already started to write, to work on it during the workshop. Registration is free of charge, but participants should cover their travel and accommodation expenses. The number of participants is limited to 20 on a first come-first served basis. Wannabee oparticipants should send theri application -including information on their research interest to laura.pioli@unica.it

Day 1 -April 18, 15-18.
Introduction:
Why publishing?
-Ethics in publishing,
-How to plan research considering publication outcomes
-How to recognize what is important enough to publish
-Who is your intended audience, how to choose a venue that will reach them
Day 2 April 19, 9-18.
-Writing the manuscript:
-How to organize a manuscript, use of outline,
-changes in plans, collaborating with other researchers and with other authors, integrating other authors’ work into the
manuscript,
-English grammar styles, preparing figures, tables.
Supplementary material. Proofreading
Day 3 April 20, 9-17
-Submitting your work and navigate the editorial process:
-Choosing the right journal, drafting a cover letter
-What happens to your paper once it's left you - the review process
-What to do when it comes back to you from review
M. Ort is emeritus professor at the University of Northern Arizona and adjunct professor at Trinity College, Dublin and
University at Buffalo, New York. He is currently associate editor of the Bulletin of Volcanology, the Bulletin of the
Geological Society of America, and Geologica Acta; he edited books for the Geological Society of London and us
geological survey
N. Riggs is professor emerita at the University of Northern Arizona and adjunct professor at Trinity College, Dublin. She
is currently science editor of the Geological society of America books, associate editor of Geosphere, and was previously
editor of the Bulletin of the Geological Society of America.
L. Pioli is associate professor at the University of Cagliari. She is deputy editor of the Bulletin of Volcanology and
associate editor of the Italian Journal of Geosciences.
