Dr. Stefania Da Pelo has got a degree in Geological Sciences and a PhD in Earth of Sciences.

She is an Associate Professor in Applied geology at the Department of Chemistry and Earth Sciences – University of Cagliari where she teaches Applied Geology in the First cycle degree of Geological Sciences and Geological design in the Master degree.

Her research interests were mainly concentrated on environmental studies, addressed to the processes of water-rock interaction in active and closed mining areas and in industrial area. The most important scientific results concern (i) the study of the formation-dissolution-precipitation cycle of secondary products of sulphide oxidation, (ii) the study of the surface reactions of minerals of environmental interest, (iii) the geochemical and mineralogical controls on the distribution and the mobility of heavy metals in groundwater, (iv) environmental impact assessment of mining, industrial and agricultural activity on surface- and ground- water (v) groundwater monitoring network design, (vi) 3D hydrogeological conceptual model reconstruction in porous and fractured aquifers.

She worked as a consultant for the “Environmental Protection and Management of Water Resources Service” at the Regional Government of Sardinia (Italy) for the implementation of the 2000/60/EC Directive through the “River basin management plan” aiming at sustainable management and protection of freshwater resources and related ecosystems. She also has experience of undertaking large SIAs.

She is the scientific coordinator for several project, as, among other: “Identifying the sources of manganese, sulphates and trichloromethane in groundwater at Portoscuso (Sardinia-Italy)” founded by Comune di Portoscuso, Enel Energia SpA and Enel Green Power SpA; “Deepen the grounwater bodies knowledge for review and updating of the Sardinian River basin management plan”, founded by the Regional Government of Sardinia.

She is Work Pakage Leader of the WP1 (Advancing hydrogeological Knowledge) in the framework of the H2020 project: de-FLuoridation technologies for imprOving quality of WatEr and agRo-animal products along the East African Rift Valley in the context of aDaptation to climate change, founded by EU Commission.

She is author and co-author of several scientific paper, IAH, AIGA, IMWA and SIGEA member and reviewer for  several journal as, among other, Mine Water and the Environment journal (Springer), Science of the Total environment and Environmental Engineering and Management Journal.
