IE is a 36-hour course. 24 hours will be based on traditional teaching, with me explaining the core models of International Trade theory and practice. 12 hours (or less, depending on how many students take the course) will be available for your own presentations based on a topic chosen from a list I have prepared for you. You are also welcome to propose additional topics not included in my list. More information inside.

IE is a 36-hour course.

24 hours will be based on traditional teaching, with me explaining the core models of International Trade theory and practice.

12 hours (or less, depending on how many students take the course) will be available for your own presentations based on topic chosen from a list I have prepared for you (see below). You are also welcome to propose additional topics not included in my list.

To prepare a presentation, you can work alone or in cooperation with one of your colleagues. Presentations will be evaluated. They will count for one third of the final grade.

Here is my tentative list, together with the suggested text/paper from which to start:

  • Increasing returns to scale and trade (Chapter 7 of KOM*)
  • Heterogeneous firms and trade (Chapter 8 of KOM)
  • The multinational firm (Chapter 8 of KOM; Chapter 22, MMKM**)
  • Protectionism and the effects of tariffs (Chapter 10, KOM)
  • Protectionism and the political economy of voting (Chapter 10 of KOM; Chapter 19, MMKM)
  • Offshoring as Trade in tasks (Grossman, Rossi-Hansberg, 2006, Sections 1-4, in the page “Materiale didattico” on Teams)
  • Global value chain (GVC 2017 WB, in the page “Materiale didattico” on Teams)

* KOM is the Krugman, Obstfeld, Melitz textbook.

** MMKM is the Markusen, Melvin et al. textbook.
