Abstract

Monteponi mine, active from 1851 to 1998, was once one of the major European post-war mines, with an annual production of up to 600.000 t of lead and zinc minerals. The mine was primarily developed underground using different methods depending on the dept of the ore bodies and on the period when the mining took place. While the mine was still active, subsidence phenomena of the topographic surface, corresponding to the most superficial parts of the seam were identified. More recently, at the beginning of 2000, the development of fractures was observed at the edges of the Monteponi mining village. Today the potential risk of residual subsidence needs to be understood and quantified. In the paper, The analysis of the subsidence phenomenon has bee developed on the base of the displacement measured at the ground surface and on the simulation of the collapse of the underground mining voids. The paper describes the research carried out and proposes an interpretation model for the prediction of the future enlargement of the subsidence area
