Abstract

The book contains contributions by scholars of Mediterranean Arab world on the subject of birth and spread of the youth movements of political opposition with particular regard to the student world and the role that universities have played in the cultural and political development of the various regions of reference. Examining the evolution of these associations in the second half of the twentieth century, their role in the intellectual and political debate, their position about international and domestic events, the role of leaders, the alliances and the political battles, the presence of minority groups and, finally, the influences of Western protest movements, the volume aims to recover, in a historical and sociological perspective, a phase of the recent history of some Arab countries that have been involved in the "Arab springs". The history of thought, the progressive evolution of civil society, the complex articulation of political discourse, authoritarianism, repression and censorship regimes are all aspects that are often left in the shade in the analysis of observers.
