Abstract

Thin overlays are typically protective interventions in pavement maintenance with a minimum thickness of around 12-15 mm. Whereas Ultra Thin Overlays (UTO), as thin as 12 mm, act as thin overlays however unlike the previously mentioned, they permit the extension of durability with an easy laying technique. Research, which started in 2007, is based on particular proprieties of the mortars with different types of cement, aggregates, a patented mixture of acrylic resins and additives. This application is well known in concrete repair and the aim of the research is to export the technique into road asphalt pavements. Experimental analysis was performed both in laboratory and in field tests. The tests show the remarkable ability to maintain the stiffness of the materials subjected to thermal stress, a strong ability to support adhesion however with low skid resistance, the latter being overcome with the introduction of different grit sizes. The overlay can potentially affect many aspects of maintenance such as restoring degraded surfaces, improving scratch resistance and hardness, sealing the cracks and protecting it from solvent fuels and very high temperatures in airfield pavements.
