Abstract

Starting from the fifteenth century the advent of the guns and the changed strategies of war require a substantial modification of the defence systems and a redesign of the city walls functional to the crossfire of the artillery positioned along the new bastion line. The pentagonal bastion, located at the union of two curtains, characterizes the new defence systems applied from the sixteenth century, by military engineers to the medieval circuits of Cagliari, Alghero and Castelsardo. This change in the shape and size of the cities gives rise to a first-class architectural and landscape historical heritage that we can now analyse and represent through the tools of Drawing today capable, also thanks to the development of modern information technologies, of a greater communicative ability.
