Abstract

This paper focuses on the theme of recovering an authorial modern architecture, the main build- ing of the Engineering and Architecture Campus of the University of Cagliari. It is an experi- mental building in the field of prefabrication designed in the late 1960s by Enrico Mandolesi and inaugurated in 1970. The project started with a careful study of archival material and the original drawings of the historic factory, which enabled the development of a BIM model, through which the energy and structural performances of the building could be verified both in its current state and in alternatives intervention scenarios. The rehabilitation of the building aims to combine the instances of raising the quality of individual, collective and frontal teaching within the existing building with improving energy performance and complying with fire regulations that the modern factory could not respond to. The project focuses on the adaptability of the existing building fol- lowing the principle of minimal intervention and recognizable additions. The energy upgrading of the building is part of an integrated environmental mitigation work to which the renaturalization of the terraces and roof contributes, restoring new collective spaces of high spatial and environ- mental quality open to the city.
