Abstract

One of the goals of the European energy transition process is to increase the sustainability of the energy sector by democratizing it, allowing citizens to produce, share, and sell energy generated from locally owned renewable facilities. Renewable energy communities and citizen energy communities have been introduced as innovative ways to enable end customers to play an active role and raise awareness of their energy usage. To support this, European initiatives are providing suitable financing mechanisms and Member States are encouraged to promote the widespread development of these new entities. This paper presents a case study of a collective self-consumption group located in a smart building that is funded by the EU Horizon 2020 Lightness project and describes a techno-economic analysis of the potential benefits that can be achieved.
