Abstract

Process mining (PM) is a new branch of Business Analytics (BA) that applies data mining and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to extract knowledge directly and in an automated manner from corporates’ information systems (IS), enabling an objective and better understanding of business processes. PM has proved to help corporates fully reach their potential and generate competitive advantages, but its value- added and how this can be achieved are still scarcely investigated in the scientific literature. This article highlights PM’s benefits to companies, regardless of their sector or dimension, through a systematic literature review of PM’s benefits and applications in different businesses. We found out that PM comes with relevant improvements for organizations and troublesome aspects that must be considered before and during its implementation. More research is needed to further investigate the role of PM in large, medium, and small enterprises and in the public sector.
