Abstract

This article explores the theoretical relevance of two paradigms of hermeneutics, narrativist and translational, in the field of psychoanalysis, with particular attention to the implications in the understanding of personal identity. Essentially, an integrative development of the concept of narrative identity is attempted through a concept of translational-transformative identity. In psychoanalysis, identity transformation makes use of the translation of emotional experiences into language and language into emotional experiences. Time, body, history, external reality and psychic reality are dimensions that come into play in this process, which binds the becoming of identity to the experiential datum it aims to go beyond. This perspective protects psychoanalysis better from the nihilist drifts involved in a unilaterally narrativist vision of identity.
