Abstract

Traditional multimedia contents only stimulate the senses sight and hearing, therefore the research efforts try to provide realistic media contents to the users to stimulate the other senses. Realistic media contents are media with multiple sensory effects, with the aim of enriching the user's experience through the five senses representation, which is considered as an interesting method to enhance the Quality of Experience (QoE). In the home environment, customary devices with opportune smart features (e.g., air conditioning, lights, etc.) can be employed to deliver the sensory effects. A subjective test measurement campaign has been conducted to assess the QoE for multi-sensorial media in a real smart home scenario. Based on QoE assessment results, this paper discusses the research challenges and open issues for multi-sensorial applications in smart home scenario, which may motivate additional researches in this emerging domain of study.
