Abstract

In the years 2014 - 2015, the Livio Duce military complex (Cagliari, Sardinia), previously known as Caserma Cascino, built in the 19th century as prison and currently headquarters of the Carabinieri Force, has been the object of an interdisciplinary research. The study was intended as a scientific support to the functional restoration project, entrusted by the Agency of Demanio (through the ‘Provveditorato OO.PP.’ for Lazio, Abruzzo, Tuscany and Sardinia). In this context, a rigorous methodological protocol was defined and tested by the University of Cagliari (DICAAR) in order to integrate the terrestrial laser scanner survey carried out by a team from the Sapienza University of Rome (DSDRA) with the studies on historical sources, the material analysis, and the stratigraphic and chronological interpretation. The collected information has been structured through the Raumbuch, a tool for the recording of detailed thematic datasheets focused on all the construction elements. Starting from the results of this research, data and information were incorporated into a parametric model HBIM-Heritage Building Information Model. Specifically, the model was used to record and organize the outcomes of the accurate knowledge process by integrating information about architectural aspects of the building, findings of diagnostic tests on materials and degradation phenomena, static features of the building, residual performance of building components and assessments about the cultural and historical value of the architectures. This dynamic and updatable model is the tool for coordinating different skills in the following simulation and evaluation phases of different intervention scenarios. The outcome of the process conceived and tested in this case study is an encouraging premise for the application of this methodology to the redevelopment, functional adaptation and management methodologies for the enhancement of the military historical heritage (19th20th centuries), including possible strategies of dual use.
