Abstract

Morality plays a central role in social life by providing a set of principles to weigh others’ wants and needs in respect to our own goals. To fully appreciate the impact of this process on an individual’s social life, it is essential to consider how morality develops from childhood to adulthood. This entry examines moral development by considering the similarities and differences in morality between adults and children. Then, morality in atypical development will be described. The specific case of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is explored to specify the possible role of empathy and perspective taking in moral development. This entry further explores the impact of moral education to promote moral development and concludes by considering future directions in the study of moral development across the lifespan.
