Abstract

The essay starts from the assumption that there is a privileged connection between the numerical pattern of the Petrarchean rhymes and the metric peculiarities of the “sestina”.The “sestina”s typical procedure, characterized by crossed back graduation of the rhymes, recalls the medieval deuce game. In doubling the sestina Petrarca proves its infinite reproductive quality. Around this infinite cypher he organizes the whole numerical and symbolic structure of the collection.
