Naufragi, approdi e ritorni

Abstract

The book analyses English and Spanish plays which were written in the aftermath of the discovery of America. The contrastive analysis of chronicles and plays helps to reveal how both of them shaped the events into plots which served nationalistic issues. Moreover, performances staged the encounter with the Amerindian alterity and the many ways Europeans can survive in an alien country. Throughout the texts the voice of the natives can be heard, while their efforts to make sense of a devastating experience are staged.
