Matteo Tonezzer received his PhD degree “cum laude” from the Faculty of Physics at the University of Trento, Italy. His thesis was regarding the optimization of inorganic and organic nanostructured materials toward gas sensing.

He won the “Young Scientist Award” from the European Materials Research Society (EMRS) and worked in research centers in France (ESRF), Brazil (UFMG), Vietnam (HUST), Italy (INFM, CNR), South Korea (INHA) and USA (GeorgiaTech). He participated in 14 national and international research projects, and was principal investigator in four of them. He is currently working as a researcher (RtdB) at the University of Cagliari.

He is author of fifty scientific papers on international journals and contributed, also with invited talks, to tens of international conferences. He is editor for six international peer-review journals and organizer of several international conferences.

His main area of interest concerns the growth and characterization of functional nanostructures, and their use as active material in sensing devices and chemometrics. He recently developed an innovative approach to make chemoresistors smart and selective by inserting them into a thermal gradient and then applying machine learning algorithms to obtain miniaturized 'thermal electronic noses' that can be integrated into portable devices.
