Cornelis van der Mee e` nato ad Amsterdam (Olanda) l’11.05.1953 e si e` laureato con lode in Matematica nel 1977 e in Fisica nel 1978 (Universita` Libera di Amsterdam). Usufruendo della borsa, ha concluso il Dottorato di Ricerca ad Amsterdam nel 1981. Negli anni 1982-1988 e` stato assistant professor alla Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, la Texas Tech University, la Clarkson University e la University of Pittsburgh. Negli anni 1988-1990 e` stato professore associato alla University of Delaware. Dal 01.11.1992 al 31.07.2000 e` stato professore associato di Analisi Matematica e dal 01.08.2000
professore ordinario di Fisica Matematica presso l’Universita` di Cagliari.

Negli anni 1983-1991 Cornelis van der Mee e` stato visitatore CNR in diverse universita` italiane (Firenze, Pavia, Roma La Sapienza) per collaborazione scientifica in teoria cinetica. Nel periodo 1983-2004 e` stato visitatore nel Dipartimento di Fisica e Astronomia dell’Universita` Libera di Amsterdam per collaborazione scientifica in ottica lineare e scienze atmosferiche. Nel 2003 ha organizzato, insieme con il collega Sebastiano Seatzu, la International Workshop on Operator Theory and Applications (IWOTA) a Cagliari. Nel 2008 ha preso un semestre sabbatico alla University of Texas at Arlington. E` stato
referee di numerosi lavori in teoria cinetica, ottica lineare, algebra lineare e analisi numerica e membro della editorial board di due riviste. Ha tenuto numerose conferenze, anche in qualita` di invited speaker, in convegni internazionali.

Cornelis van der Mee si e` occupato di vari argomenti, anche lontani tra essi, in Matematica Applicata, Fisica e Astronomia quali lo studio dell’equazione di trasporto nell’astratto e nelle applicazioni (atmosferi planetari, reattori nucleari, gas diatomici, crescita delle cellule), di cosiddetti sistemi forward-backward, della descrizione e dello scattering della luce polarizzata e dell’algebra lineare in stutture con prodotto scalare indefinito. E` autore/coautore di n.180 pubblicazioni, di cui n.5 libri e n.136 lavori in riviste internazionali.

Attualmente Cornelis van der Mee si occupa dei seguenti argomenti di ricerca:
1) Equazioni nonlineari integrabili (rappresentazione di soluzioni esatte,metodi numerici di risoluzione) quali le equazioni NLS, KdV, sine-Gordon. Equazioni integrabili nel discreto.
2) Teoria di scattering per le equazioni di Schroedinger, Zakharov-Shabat e delle onde. Teoria di scattering nel discreto.
3) Modellistica matematica e analisi numerica di dispositivi fotonici.
4) Matrici e operatori lineari con struttura (aspetti analitici e numerici).

Cornelis van der Mee was born in Amsterdam (Netherlands) on May 11, 1953, and graduated from the Free University of Amsterdam in mathematics in 1977 and in physics in 1978. Using a scholarship he completed his PhD in mathematics in Amsterdam in 1981. In the years 1982-1988 he has been assistant professor at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Texas Tech University, Clarkson University, and the University of Pittsburgh. In the years 1988-1990
he has been associate professor at the University of Delaware. From November 1, 1992 until July 31, 2000, he has been associate professor of mathematical analysis and from August 1, 2000, full professor of mathematical physics at the University of Cagliari.

In the years 1983-1991 Cornelis van der Mee has been a visitor (with funding from the Italian National Research Council CNR) in various Italian universities (Florence, Pavia, Rome La Sapienza) to conduct research in collaboration in kinetic theory. In the period 1983-2004 he has a frequent visitor of the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the Free University of Amsterdam to conduct research in collaboration in linear optics and atmospheric sciences. In 2003 he has organized, together with his colleague Sebastiano Seatzu, the
International Workshop on Operator Theory and Applications (IWOTA) in Cagliari. In 2008 he has spent a sabbatical semester at the University of Texas at Arlington. He has refereed numerous papers in kinetic theory, linear optics, linear algebra and numerical analysis and has been on the editorial board of two journals. He has given numerous talks, also as invited speaker, at international conferences.

Cornelis van der Mee has conducted research on various, often mutually distant, topics in applied mathematics, physics and astronomy, such as the study of the transport equation in an abstract setting and in applications (planetary atmospheres, nuclear reactors, diatomic gases, cell growth), so-called forward-backward systems, the description and scattering of polarized light, and linear algebra in stuctures having an indefinite scalar product. He has been the (co)author of 180 publications (5 books and 136 papers in international journals).

Presently Cornelis van der Mee has the following research interests:
1) Integrable nonlinear equations (representation of exact solutions, numerical solution methods) such as the NLS, KdV, sine-Gordon equations. Discrete integrable equations.
2) Scattering theory for the Schroedinger, Zakharov-Shabat and wave equations. Discrete scattering theory.
3) Mathematical modelling and numerical analysis of photonic crystals.
4) Structured matrices and linear operators (analytical and numerical aspects).
