Dal 1 settembre 1997 Franco Frau lavora presso l’Università di Cagliari (UNICA) in Italia, e attualmente svolge la sua attività didattica e di ricerca presso il Dipartimento di Scienze Chimiche e Geologiche (DSCG) come Professore Associato. Insegna Mineralogia per i geologi, e Mineralogia e Geochimica Ambientali per i naturalisti. I suoi interessi di ricerca si concentrano principalmente sulla Mineralogia e Geochimica Ambientale, con particolare riguardo ai processi di interazione acqua-roccia nelle miniere attive e chiuse. E’ autore e co-autore di circa 115 pubblicazioni scientifiche, per lo più articoli in riviste internazionali e atti di congressi internazionali. Responsabile scientifico o partecipante di progetti di ricerca locali e nazionali, progetti di cooperazione con i paesi in via di sviluppo (Cile, Brasile e Marocco) e, recentemente, Task Leader nel progetto europeo Horizon2020 FLOWERED (de-FLuoridation technologies for imprOving quality of WateEr and agRo-animal products along the East African Rift Valley in the context of aDaptation to climate change) coordinato da DSCG-UNICA e con il coinvolgimento di altri 13 partner provenienti da 7 diversi paesi: Etiopia, Italia, Kenya, Spagna, Tunisia, Tanzania, Regno Unito. Organizzatore di congressi internazionali e curatore degli atti congressuali. Liaison Officer del NEA-OECD per l’Università di Cagliari. Revisore di numerose riviste internazionali, Guest Editor di alcuni numeri speciali di riviste internazionali, e membro del comitato di redazione di alcune riviste internazionali.
I principali campi di ricerca riguardano: (i) l’inquinamento ambientale in aree minerarie, (ii) la rimozione di contaminanti anionici (As, Mo, Sb, F) dall’acqua mediante processi di sorption (ferridrite, idrossidi a doppio strato), (iii) l’uso di ammendanti organici e inorganici per la inertizzazione di scarti minerari, (iv) caratterizzazione mineralogica, geochimica e morfologica delle concrezioni di grotta.

Since September 1st 1997 Franco Frau works at the University of Cagliari (UNICA) in Italy, and currently carries out his teaching and research activities at the Department of Chemical and Geological Sciences (DCGS) as Associate Professor. He teaches Mineralogy for geologists, and Environmental Mineralogy and Geochemistry for natural scientists. His research interests are mainly concentrated on Environmental Mineralogy and Geochemistry, with particular regard to the processes of water-rock interaction in active and closed mines. He is author and co-author of about 115 scientific publications mostly including articles in international journals and in proceedings of international congresses. Scientific responsible or participant of local and national research projects, co-operation projects with developing countries (Chile, Brazil and Morocco) and, recently, Task Leader in the EU Horizon2020 FLOWERED project (de-FLuoridation technologies for imprOving quality of WateEr and agRo-animal products along the East African Rift Valley in the context of aDaptation to climate change) coordinated by DCGS-UNICA and involving other 13 partners from 7 different countries: Ethiopia, Italy, Kenya, Spain, Tunisia, Tanzania, United Kingdom. Organizer of international congresses and Editor of the proceedings. Liaison Officer of the NEA-OECD for the University of Cagliari. Reviewer of several international journals, Guest Editor of some special issues of international journals, and member of the Editorial Board of some international journals.
The main research interests concern: (i) environmental contamination in mine areas, (ii) removal of anionic contaminants (As, Mo, Sb, F) from water by sorption processes (ferrihydrite, layered double hydroxides), (iii) use of organic and inorganic amendments for remediation of mine wastes, (iv) mineralogical, geochemical and morphological characterization of speleothems.
