Nicole Grandi took her master degree cum laude in Health Biology at the University of Bologna in 2012. After one year of post-graduation internship at the Human Retroviruses Laboratory of Sant’Orsola University Hospital (Bologna), in 2014 she joined the Ph.D. program in "Life, Environmental and Drug Sciences" of the University of Cagliari, working at the Molecular Virology Laboratory of the Dept. of Life and Environmental Sciences under the supervision of Prof. Enzo Tramontano. She obtained her Ph.D. in 2017, with a thesis characterizing the type-W Human Endogenous Retroviruses (HERV-W) integrated into the human genome and their presence among non-human primates. Nicole Grandi continued her work at the Molecular Virology Laboratory as a Post Doc, exploring the genomic diversity and expression of HERV sequences in the human transcriptome, with particular attention to their variation in diseased contexts (multiple sclerosis, lateral amyotrophic sclerosis, HIV infection, cancer). Her expertise currently combines traditional skills in molecular virology and genetics with bioinformatics tools to analyze cellular and viral expression in transcriptomic data and to characterize the environmental microbial diversity by metagenomic and metratranscriptomic approaches. Since 2019, she is Assistant Professor at the Dept. of Life and Environmental Sciences, University of Cagliari.
