PhD Course on Advanced Concepts in Electronic Biosensors

UPDATE: Scheduling ONLINE!
27 November 2023

Electronic biosensors have gained a significant fame as easy-to-use, low-cost and high-performing devices for a series of applications related to the recognition of biological molecules and reactions. It is generally said that electronic biosensors can overcome most of the limitation of other biosensing approaches, providing high sensitivity and selectivity and a low time to result.

Where this came from? And how much of this is true, or how much effort this requires?

The aim of the course is to unravel the most peculiar phenomena that lead actual performances of electronic biosensors, focusing in particular on three figures of merits: settling time, sensitivity and selectivity. The impact of device geometry and of experimental conditions will be described, as well as the importance of properly choosing the measurement conditions and the biochemical setup.

Detailed topics:

  1. A “quick” recap to electronic biosensors and figures of merits (3 h);
  2. Settling time: the influence of device and diffusion geometries (3 h);
  3. Sensitivity: the multiple effects of charge screening (3 h);
  4. Selectivity: more than a matter of receptors and analytes (3 h);
  5. Final activity: open discussion on a piece of literature (4 h).
