Application of ICT to the techniques for molecular biology

Period: February, 2023 (updated will be available soon)
27 November 2023

The seminar course aims at providing to students basic information about the main techniques employed in molecular biology, focusing on the roles of electronic engineers and bioengineers in the design of these techniques, on their advancement and even to the development of innovative solutions beyod the state-of-the-art. A systematic analysis of bio-physical properties of biomolecules will allow a thorough understanding on the mechanism beyond detection of basic biochemical reactions. A critical analysis of the methodologies available so far will lead the student towards the most up-to-date trends in research. A great attention will be devoted to the topic of biosensors.

The course is mainly conceived for the students of the Bachelor Degree in Electrical, Electronic and Informatic Engineering and in Electronic, Informatic and Telecommunications. In order to make a better use of the information of the course, the participation is suggested to students at the third year.

The course is also open to students beloning to the Bachelor Degree in Biomedical Engineering and the students of the M. Sc. in Electronic Engineering, in particular those following the curriculum on "Electronic Technologies for emerging applications".

Duration: 10 hours (9 hours of lessons + 1 hour for the final test)

Program:

  • Introduction (0.5 h);
  • Structure and chemo-physical properties of biomolecules (1.5 h);
  • Immunological techniques (3 h);
  • Molecular techniques (3 h);
  • Beyond the state-of-the-art: introduction to Lab-on-Chip and biosensors (1 h).
