Abstract

The book contains a very large and unpublished record relating to the Allies Mediterranean Strategy during the Second World War and, in particular, the plans to conquer Sardinia. Since January 1941, when the idea of conquering Sardinia began to take shape in the Anglo-Americans, until the 19th of September 1943, when Sardinia fell into Allied hands “as a gift”, there was a succession of plans and projects to invade the island, characterized by an uneven trend, a continuous stop and go. The volume was compiled from the consultation of 243 documents held in British State Archives in Kew and the United States Archives in College Park, MD. The first part of the book contains a historical introduction together with archive notes and references, accompanied by a section of 45 iconographic illustrations, a list of acronyms, code names and abbreviations, indices of document sources and names. The volume begins “La Memoria Ritrovata” series, as a result of a project that aims at creating an archive of historical memory that will serve as a point of reference not only for academic researchers but also for the community as a whole. To do this, we will identify, acquire, classify and publish documented evidence concerning Sardinian history conserved in national and foreign archives. The project forms an integral part of the wider general catalogue of Sardinian cultural heritage, promoting the collection and study of material relating to oral tradition and iconography. In addition to the series of critical editions of selected documents extracted from various archive sources, a website has been created and there will be a number of initiatives aimed at fostering wide debate on the historical roots of Sardinian communities.
