Business metaphors in the economist newsletter: a case for authentic materials in L2 classrooms

Abstract
The present work aims at analysing the use of metaphors present in the newsletter summaries of the weekly magazine The Economies. In particular, it will consider those metaphors used to describe trends, variations or causative indicators. The second objective of the present article is to show how such metaphors can be used successfully in L2 teaching. Our corpus consists of 77 summaries from the Economist nuwsletter (online edition) which is sent free of charge to subscribers upon request. These newsletter contains the summaries of all economic-financial articles published in the week on the online edition of the magazine. For the present work we chose only those articles which presented a title and a graph. This choice enabled us to have a better and more representative picture of the quality of the metaphors used, while at the same time to use the graphs for a comparative analysis on the communicative force of the business language
