Abstract

A series of defensive updates projects took place from 1720 within the Sardinian fortification system. The Sabaudo’s government was involved in restoration works of the coastal defensive system and extension of Cagliari and Alghero stronghold circuit. Santa Croce western 16th century bastioned front of Cagliari was object to extension and modifications. What was first design by Spanish crown engineers went under construction works by Felice De Vincenti with the addition of “Scuderia di Santa Croce” (1723-1728) that was lately convert into “Carlo Emanuele III” barrack. The military construction was functionally improved by these works; many 16th century features were dismissed where we find descriptions of new vaulted “climbing” path reading the Archivio di Stato di Torino cartography. Survey and analysis of the complete defensive structures clearly shows the function of this system of path within the “war machine” and the creation of a digital model helps understanding and represent the complex for a better communication of this new extensions.
