 Tina Kover (O’Donnell), an award-winning literary translator, will be speaking on “What Does It Mean to Be a Literary Translator Today?”

Abstract: With the recent Nobel Prize wins of Annie Ernaux, Jon Fosse, and Han Kang, and the popularity of “Scandinavian Noir” crime fiction, Elena Ferrante’s My Brilliant Friend series, and Japanese manga, literary translation is enjoying unprecedented levels of visibility. But what does it mean to be a literary translator today? What sets this genre apart from other types of translation, and what are the particular challenges a literary translator faces? How does one get started in this highly competitive industry, and how is the game changing with the advent of artificial intelligence/ChatGPT? This masterclass will touch briefly on these topics and will conclude with a Q&A session for postgraduate students and emerging translators interested in pursuing a career in the literary field.

Tina Kover is the translator of some forty books from French, including Anne Berest’s The Postcard, Négar Djavadi’s Disoriental, and Emmelie Prophète’s Blue. Her work has won the Albertine Prize, the French Voices Award, and the Lambda Literary Award, and has been shortlisted for the (U.S.) National Book Award, the International Dublin Literary Award, the PEN Translation Prize, the Warwick Prize for Women in Translation, the Oxford-Weidenfeld Translation Prize, the Scott Moncrieff Prize, and the Dayton Literary Prize. Tina leads literary translation workshops for the American Literary Translators Association and has spoken at book clubs and festivals worldwide about her work. She is also the co-founder of Translators Aloud, a YouTube channel that features literary translators reading from their own work.
