Distributed Systems work in an environment where there are independent machines (both hardware and software) connected with each other over a network running an OS over it. Distributed OSs have at their center the reasoning that you should use faster machines for more tasks that need speed, and slower ones for the tasks that don't. Also, central to the design of distributed OS's is making this transparent to the user. A Distributed OS makes a Distributed System a virtual uniprocessor system.

[ 3 hours ] Introduction to Distributed systems, Inherent limitations: logical clocks, vector clocks, causal ordering, global state, mutual exclusion: assertion based and token based algorithms, distributed deadlock: path-pushing, edge-chasing, and diffusion computation-based approaches. Distributed agreement:system model, classification, and solutions to agreement problem.

[ 3 hours ] File systems: design issues, and mechanisms of building a distributed file system, case study. Distributed Scheduling: design issues, components of a distributed scheduler, algorithms, load distribution vs load migration (challenges), case study;  Distributed shared memory: design issues, algorithms, coherence protocols, case study; Recovery: synchronous and asynchronous.

[ 2 hours ] Mobile Computing and QoS: Mobile IP : MIPv4, HMIP, MIPv6, SIP, and NEMO;  Quality of Service: Application layer & Network layer, Architectures: RSVP, IntServ, and MPLS.
