Abstract

Family creation, or the process of becoming a parent, can be a natural part of trans* individuals’ life (APA, 2015) but the cultural, social and institutional barriers trans* individuals have to face could play a crucial role on their desires and intentions on having children. "is study moves from an intersectionality perspective that focused on trans* and parenting identities and explores parenting desires and intentions among a sample of trans* individuals. 105 trans* Italian individuals carried out a research protocol composed by closed and open items evaluating their desire and intensions to have children. Narratives and factors associated to these variables was explored through a qualitative analysis. Findings revealed that the 64% of participants expressed the desire and the 53% expressed the intention to have a child. "e motivations associated with these choices are not very di#erent of those expressed by the cisgender population. "is study revealed that despite the persisting depth of heteronormativity and cisnormativity in Italy, there are a considerable number of trans* individuals who want to become parents in the future, therefore it is necessary to re&ect on the reproductive implications of the gender-a%rming process and the pathways to parenting.
