Abstract
At the beginning of the XIX century, the territory of Sardinia is interested by numerous surveying campaigns. These are, in particular, partial representations of the coastline or surveys of the stronghold; the "best" map that at the time showed the entire island is the one created by Tommaso Napoli and published by Rizzi-Zannoni in the 1811. However, this document shows numerous shortcomings regarding the use of modern tools and methods for survey and representation of places, as the Piedmontese officer Alberto Della Marmora will soon verified during his activity finalized of creating a geological map. Once Della Marmora realizes the inaccuracy of the Tommaso Napoli’s map -starting from the 1825- will dedicate himself to the surveys completed between the 1835 and the 1838 with the support of Carlo De Candia. In the 1845 A. Della Marmora delivered the drawing in scale 1:250.000 in the hands of a skilled engraver in Paris, which would allow the printing and dissemination of the "correct" image of the island. A fundamental step for the construction of the map is the design of a network of cornerstones from which observe and measure the shapes of the landscape. The choice of these points is the most important phase for a correct planning of field operations and requires the verification of mutual visibility between the cornerstones. Therefore peaks, coastal towers, bell towers and bridges become the places from which the surveyors perform instrumental measurements and panoramic views with the aim to enrich the detail of the map. The precision of the instrumental operations allows to find the cornerstones employed and the position of disappeared architectures and to represent the Sardinia landscape and its most recent transformations.File | Size | Format | |
