Biometric technology for information security

Seminar for the Bachelor degree courses in Biomedical Engineering and Electrical, Electronics and Computer Engineering
01 December 2023

Also devoted to PhD students of Computer Science and Electronic Eng. (DRIEI)

Duration: 12 hours

Period of development: January / February.

Suggested year for successful content acquisition: third.

Seminar contents: The seminar aims to provide the student with an introductory overview of biometric technologies for personal recognition, illustrating the main processing and design methods. The illustration of the algorithms, methods and recognition systems will take place in the form of a computer exercise, so that students can have practical experience of what a biometric system is and the engineering problems associated with its implementation.

Pre-requisites: To successfully follow the seminar it is advisable for the student to have the fundamentals of statistics (random variables, distributions), and a knowledge of the fundamental constructs of programming or scripting languages ??(C, Python, Matlab).

Preparatory courses with content compatible with the topics covered: Foundations of Computer Science, Advanced Programming and elements of software engineering. Also suggested Matlab / Python seminars.

Program:

  • Introduction (2 hours). Biometrics. Motivations and potential. Overview of a biometric system. Review of statistics and introduction to pattern recognition.
  • Fingerprints (3 hours). Definition. Fingerprint processing and recognition. Spoofed fingerprint attacks.
  • Faces (3 hours). Definition. Face processing and recognition. Facial expressions.
  • Electroencephalography (2 hours). Definition. EEG signal processing and recognition.
  • Multimodal biometrics (2 hours). Definition. Methods of "merger": decision, measure, characteristics. Multimodal systems.

Accreditation (1 CFU):

  • Compulsory attendance at least 9 hours of lessons, and carrying out of a final test in the form of a questionnaire on topics covered in the course.
  • 2 ECTS will be assigned if the student, in addition to complying with the aforementioned obligation, requests and carries out a system project among those exemplified in the seminar within the time set with the teacher.

The course material is delivered in the TEAMS platform whose link is provided as registration is open.
