RESEARCH ACTIVITY

The main research topics are summarized below:

- Application of techniques based on neural networks for the reconstruction of chaotic time series, for the development of inferential systems, modeling of chemical and biochemical processes, development of nonlinear control systems.

- Development of estimators, such as the geometric observer and the extended Kalman filter, for the reconstruction of the states of a system. The estimators have been applied to distillation columns, crystallization and polymerization processes, chemical and biochemical reactors.

- Development of software sensors for online monitoring of non-measurable (or difficult-to-measure) variables, such as crystal size distribution during a crystallization process and rheological properties.

- Mathematical modeling, dynamic analysis, monitoring and control of activated sludge treatment plants.

- Mathematical modeling and characterization of the effect of noise (intended as model uncertainty or as the effect of fluctuations present in a real system) on mathematical models describing the behavior of typical chemical and biochemical processes. 

- Mathematical modeling, dynamic analysis, monitoring and control of an anti-solvent crystallization system.

- Dynamic analysis and process control for the separation of multicomponent mixtures.

- Analysis of experimental data and modeling of degradation processes for the removal of pollutants.
