Virginia Pilloni is a tenure-track Assistant Professor at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (DIEE) of the University of Cagliari. She is a member of the Net4U (Networks for Humans) laboratory. In 2009 she received the Master Degree in Telecommunication Engineering magna cum laude. From November 2011 to April 2012 she was a visiting PhD student at the Centre for Communication Systems Research, University of Surrey. In 2013 she received the PhD degree in Information Engineering at the University of Cagliari. She was a Research Fellow from 2013 to 2015 and from 2020 to 2021, and an Assistant Professor from 2015 to 2020, both at the University of Cagliari.

Her main research interests are on the Internet of Things, particularly on: i) task allocation among connected devices to fairly and efficiently share available resources; ii) context-aware runtime device adaptation to network conditions; iii) efficient scheduling of appliances in a Smart Building scenario, with attention to user comfort.  She published more than 50 papers in journals, international conferences and book chapters, for which she received almost 1000 citations and an h-index of 16 (Scopus source). Virginia Pilloni participated in several regional, national and international research projects, among which: INSIEME, funded by MISE; QoE-Net, funded by UE-H2020-MSCA-ITN; Cagliari PORT 2020, funded by MIUR; DEMANES, funded by UE-FP7. She was the principal investigator for the R&D LEAPH project, funded by RAS-POR FESR. She is an expert evaluator for European H2020 and BELSPO projects.

She was co-founder of the academic spin-off GreenShare Srl, which mainly offers ICT solutions for mobility. GreenShare’s most successful services are SmarTicket, TeseoApp e Clacsoon.

Virginia Pilloni was a member of the organizing committee of the IEEE IoT Vertical and Topical Summit for Tourism 2020. She has been a workshop chair and track chair for several international conferences, including IEEE ICC 2024. She was a keynote speaker for the International Conference on Applied Computing (AC) 2019 and an invited speaker for the topical session Sensors and Sensor Networks and for the vertical session Smart Cities at the IEEE World Forum on Internet of Things (WF-IoT) 2019. She has been a technical committee member and a speaker for several international conferences. She currently serves as an editor for the Elsevier Computer Networks and Frontiers in Communications and Networks journals. She has served as a guest editor for several Special Issues of the MDPI Energies journal. She was the editor of the IoT and Sensor Networks in Industry and Society book by MDPI. 

Virginia Pilloni is currently an IEEE Senior Member. She is the Chair of the IEEE ComSoc Young Professionals (YP) Standing Committee, and a member of it since 2021. She is also a member of the IEEE ComSoc Strategic Planning Standing Committee as a YP representative, a member of the IEEE ComSoc Member Services Board, where she also serves as the chair of the Awards subcommittee, and the YP representative of the IEEE ComSoc Europe, Middle-East & Africa (EMEA) Region Board.
