In the district’s libraries, you can consult and read books, magazines or other types of documents, whether they belong to the libraries or are your own. The libraries provide suitable reading areas and seating.

To consult a library document, you must first find out its location by searching the catalogue, and then

•     ask a member of staff for it;
•     look for it directly on the shelves in libraries that use an ‘open-shelf’ system, where materials are arranged in an order that allows readers to find their way around independently.

At the Dante Alighieri section, the Ubaldo Floris Room and the Dante Group Study Room are available for group study.  
The rooms will be available to all students enrolled at the University of Cagliari from Monday to Saturday during the library’s opening hours.
 
To access the Dante Group Study Room and the Ubaldo Floris Room, each group must consist of a minimum of two and a maximum of six people, for a total of no more than 12 people.

In the Giordano Bruno section, Rooms 1 and Room 2 are available for group study.  
These rooms will be available to all students enrolled at the University of Cagliari from Monday to Saturday during the library’s opening hours.

To access Room 1, each group must consist of a minimum of two and  and a maximum of eight people, for a total of no more than 16 people.
To access Room 2, each group must consist of a minimum of two and a maximum of four people, for a total of no more than 8 people.
   
The protocols governing access to the Library’s premises must be strictly adhered to.

The library offers a personalised support service to help you make the most of our resources (books, journals, databases, electronic periodicals) and advanced bibliographic search tools.

The individual reference service aims to assist you in understanding, selecting and using strategies for locating information – in both print and digital formats – available in our libraries or online, whether free of charge or via subscription, to help you carry out research, write a degree thesis or produce a report on a specific topic.

Individual assistance with bibliographic research is available by appointment only.

To book an appointment, you can:

Libraries within the district provide an external book lending service, in accordance with the Regulations, including through the use of automated procedures

Who can use the service
All users, provided they are registered or authorised at a library within the University Library System.

Where and how to register for the service:
At one of the University’s libraries. Registration is carried out by completing a form, available online and at the libraries.

Loan terms and duration:
The loan service is free of charge.

The service offers different loan periods depending on the type of user and the characteristics of the requested material.

• For educational texts, the standard loan period is 14 days for a maximum of 4 volumes,
• and 28 days for other documents, with the exception of material used by lecturers and in-house researchers for the purposes of ongoing research.

In the Dante Alighieri, Giordano Bruno and Cittadella dei Musei sections, an automated station is available for users to manage loans, returns and renewals.

The service is always available during the reading room’s opening hours, even when the librarians are not present: you are required to have your library card with the barcode and activated for the service; alternatively, you may use your national health card or electronic identity card.

The totem allows you to borrow or return multiple items in a single transaction.

For further information, please speak to the librarians at the reception desk.

The inter-library loan service allows you to request books from other institutions that are not held by the libraries in our Library System or by those in the Cagliari hinterland.

The service is available only to internal, registered users.

Costs:
The library may cover only the postage costs, provided that funds have been specifically set aside for this purpose. The end user of the service may be required to cover any other charges requested by the lending libraries.

Duration:
The material may be retained by the borrower for the period determined on a case-by-case basis by the lending library and, in any event, will not normally exceed 21 days from the date of delivery of the items to the user.

Interlibrary loans to other libraries:
Interlibrary loans are provided to requesting libraries for a period of 28 days from the date of dispatch, which may be extended once only for a further 14 days.
Reference works, items in poor condition and all publications dating from before 1930 are, as a rule, excluded from interlibrary loans.
Teaching books may be excluded from the service if only a small number of copies are available and, in any case, if there is high internal demand (which varies depending on the time of year); research books may also be excluded if the holders of the research collections cannot part with them, even temporarily.

The service is normally provided on a reciprocal, free-of-charge basis.

For our users

The document delivery service enables you to obtain photocopies and/or electronic copies of journal articles or parts of documents not held by our library from other libraries.

The service is reserved for internal and registered users

For libraries:

Libraries at our University can, in turn, provide Italian and foreign libraries with copies of articles or parts of books requested by their users. The service is free of charge on a reciprocal basis.

The Historical Collection of the Humanities District is housed at the Dante Alighieri Library in a room dedicated to it. 

Built up through successive acquisitions since the early 20th century, through purchases and donations, it comprises over 1,200 old volumes,  including  31 from the 16th century and  77 from the 17th century.

The collection is primarily literary and historical-philosophical in nature, but also includes scientific works.

The room also houses rare, valuable and historically significant modern books from the nineteenth century.

Bibliographic information on the antique texts can be found via the national SBN catalogue, and the sixteenth-century works are also listed in the Edit XVI catalogue maintained by the Central Institute for the Unified Catalogue.

Anyone may consult the collection provided they submit a request in advance to the Director or the relevant librarian.

Internet. In the libraries, you can use the computers on the internal network to browse the internet and search electronic resources and catalogues.

Wi-Fi. Inside the libraries, users with university login details can connect to the internet using their own devices via the Wi-Fi network (Unicamente and Eduroam).

Who can access the service and how: the service is available to internal users who have obtained authentication credentials.

For external users without credentials, access is limited to consulting the online catalogue.

Temporary guests can obtain credentials via the “Sponsor for guest” service, which can be requested at the reception desk.

As well as offering reference, guidance and bibliographic research support services, the Libraries organise the following throughout the academic year:

•  presentations and guided tours for first-year students
•  courses and seminars on how to use library services and resources

The purchase of books for teaching purposes is carried out automatically when the reading lists for individual exams on courses within the Faculties are finalised.
