Teaching and Seminar Activities of the PhD Programme – Academic Year 2020–2021

For the 2020–2021 academic year, the instructional activities planned for doctoral candidates will predominantly focus on the thematic issues concerning the relationship between Science and Law. This theme will be contextualised within the broader topic of methodology in the legal experience (metodo nell’esperienza giuridica), which was addressed during the previous academic year and to which some lectures will also be dedicated in the forthcoming year.

The in-depth study of the relationship between Science and Law responds to a long-felt need among scholars. This urgency is heightened, on the one hand, by advancements in science that affect humanity in ways and forms requiring an adaptation of legal concepts and instruments and, on the other hand, by the imperative to address new phenomena—such as the currently ongoing pandemic—that necessitate close interaction and collaboration between the two orders of knowledge, demanding a reflection on their reciprocal duties and responsibilities.

The theme will also be approached from the perspective of Law as a science or technique which not only governs human action but is, in turn, an expression of social consciousness and the values that inspire it.

Lectures will be primarily delivered by Academic Board members and will comprise both general scope lectures and specialised study seminars on specific topics (also featuring invited external scholars). These activities will maintain an interdisciplinary nature, in line with the characteristics of the Doctoral Programme.

Additionally, first-year PhD candidates are required to attend the lecture cycle that will take place within the Advanced Training Project in Legal Studies of the Venice Ca' Foscari Doctoral School, of which the Programme is a component. For the 2020/21 academic year, this project entails an in-depth exploration of the issues proposed by Digital Innovation, as detailed in the attached programme.

Teaching and Seminar Activities of the PhD Programme – Academic Year 2019–2020

For the 2019–2020 academic year, the instructional activities planned for doctoral candidates will be primarily, though not exclusively, characterised by a dedicated focus on the methodology of legal research.

The intensive study of this theme responds to a particularly felt need among young scholars and aligns perfectly with the renewed interest in such issues recently expressed by various legal scientific associations.

To this end, a cycle of meetings is scheduled, aimed at equipping doctoral candidates with the necessary tools to conduct legal research, through the conscious utilisation of the historical, comparative, and exegetical methods. These meetings, which will include both general scope lectures and specialised seminars on specific topics, will maintain an interdisciplinary nature, in line with the characteristics of the Doctoral Programme.
