This course will provide an overview on the extraction of sentiments and emotions from text, mostly from a Natural Language Processing (NLP) perspective. Sentiment Analysis is a trending topic of great importance in different domains, from recommendation systems to surveys and product reviews. The (ambitious) objective of Sentiment Analysis is to go beyond the meaning of words and detect not only the polarity of a text, but also fine-grained emotions, deception, sarcasm, lived experience. Some of the topics that will be discussed in the context of the course are: lexicon-based sentiment analysis, semantic similarity, deep learning for semantic similarity and sentiment analysis. Some open research questions will be discussed together with the audience, and we’ll analyze and work on data from challenges such as Evalita or SemEval.
