Polar surfaces: from basic principles to advanced applications.
Essential notions on solid surfaces (relaxation, reconstructions, experimental probes,
numerical simulations, etc) and basic principles of classical electrostatics in relation
with polar surfaces and polar nano-objects will be addressed in two lectures. Some
selected examples in surface physics and chemistry will also be discussed: enhanced
reactivity of polar surfaces against adsorption of charged species, phase stability of
crystals at the nano-scale and some tailored electronic properties of polar nanoobjects.
The lectures will be complemented by two hands-on-computer sessions, in which the
structural and electronic properties of selected polar oxide surfaces will be calculated
from first principles and analysed.

Schedule:
Lectures (room C):
Wednesday, May 18th (2:30pm) and Friday 20th (2:30pm).

Tutorials: (Computer room ):
Tuesday, May 24th (from 3 to 5 pm) and Wednesday, 25th (from 11 am to 1 pm).
