Il prossimo 15 luglio 2026 alle ore 10:00, presso l’Aula Mocci (Edificio G) della Facoltà di Ingegneria ed Architettura, il Prof. José Romagnoli, docente della Louisiana State University - USA, terrà il seminario dal titolo “From Data to Knowledge: AI Applications in Chemical Engineering”.
Abstract
This presentation provides an overview of current research activities at the Laboratory for Process Systems Engineering (PSE@LSU) in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Louisiana State University (LSU). The focus will be on recent advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and their applications to chemical process systems and materials design. In particular, the presentation will examine four major AI paradigms: unsupervised learning, supervised learning, reinforcement learning, and generative AI. For unsupervised learning, we will explore methods for extracting knowledge from plant data, with an emphasis on assessing plant operational status. The supervised learning section will highlight the development of intelligent process monitoring systems, predictive models, and machine learning techniques for image-based sensing. We will also briefly discuss the use of reinforcement learning for the control of complex process systems and operational optimization. Finally, the presentation will examine emerging applications of generative AI in materials design. Throughout the presentation, emphasis will be placed on practical applications to illustrate the capabilities and potential of these AI techniques.
About the Speaker
Jose A. Romagnoli is currently the endowed Gordon & Mary Cain Chair Professor and M. Gautreaux/Ethyl Chair Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering at Louisiana State University. Previously he was the ICI Chair in Process Systems Engineering at the University of Sydney where he was also the Director of the Laboratory for Process Systems Engineering. He received his Bachelor (Chemical Engineering) at the National University of the South (Argentina) in 1974, and his PhD (Chemical Engineering) at University of Minnesota in 1980. He is author of more than 300 international publications and author of the books “Data processing and reconciliation for chemical process operations” published by Academic Press International; “Introduction to Process Control” published by CRC Press and “AI in Chemical Engineering: Unlocking the Power within Data” published by CRC Press. He is a member of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, Fellow of the Institute of Engineers Australia and consultant for several international companies. He was awarded the Centenary Medal by the Prime Minister of Australia for his contributions to Chemical Engineering. His research interests cover all aspects of Process Systems Engineering specially: machine learning, modeling of complex systems, advanced model-based control and intelligent process monitoring and supervision.
