Course overview

Nowadays, data is no longer a passive entity, but the main tool used for strategic decisions based on real facts. This course aims to provide an insight into the field of advanced data organization, storage, and processing. It starts with Data Warehousing then addresses modern systems such as Big Data and Data Lake.

Lesson 1: Data Warehousing, on-line analytical process, and data mining (3h)

This lesson covers fundamental topics related to Data Warehouses: concept, characteristics, architectures, data models for Data Warehouses. There is also, addressed the on-line analytical process (OLAP) that enables the analysis of business data from different perspectives. Finally, topics related to data mining are addressed. This is the process by which patterns or other hidden information are uncovered in large data sets. Both OLAP analysis and data mining processes produce valuable information for decision making.

Lesson 2: Big Data and Data Lake (3h)

Big data and Data Lake are the most modern ways of organizing, storing, and processing data. This lesson addresses the concepts of Big Data and Data Lake, their characteristics, architectures, and the technologies used. Since there is a tendency to claim that Data Lakes will replace Data Warehouses, a comparison between the two is made.
