The philosophical debate on migration has mainly developed within a theoretical framework that assumes the nation-state as the political unit of reference and territorial sovereignty as the starting point. However, this perspective – defined as "methodological nationalism" – tends to simplify the complexity of migration, neglecting the role of colonial relations, global inequalities and transnational economic and political structures.
My research proposes an alternative approach, drawing on postcolonial studies and social sciences to develop new normative categories capable of grasping migration in its historical and structural reality. Through a comparison between normative political philosophy, postcolonial theories and analysis of migration institutions, the project reflects on the methodological nature of political theory and on the distinction between ideal and non-ideal theory.
The aim is to build a theoretical framework that overcomes the opposition between state sovereignty and individual rights, questioning the very meaning of citizenship, border and political belonging in a world characterized by interdependence and inequality.
