The Physics Department

The Physics Department of the University of Cagliari represents the only academic research and higher education center in the area of Physical Sciences present in Sardinia. Given this uniqueness in the regional panorama, the research carried out is wide-ranging, such as to ensure the presence and competitiveness of the regional system in all the main sectors of Physics, with particular attention to the possible repercussions for the territorial realities.

The Department interprets this specificity by engaging in a cultural and territorial promotion mission based on leading research (both basic and applied) of an experimental, theoretical and computational nature in the fields of physics of fundamental interactions, applied physics, astrophysics. and the physics of matter.

Connections with other research institutes

The Department structure houses a Section of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) and two Operational Units of the National Research Council, respectively belonging to the Institute of Materials (CNR-IOM) and to the Institute of Sciences of the Atmosphere and Climate (CNR-ISAC).

The Department collaborates closely in carrying out research of common interest with the research and technical staff of these institutes, as well as with those belonging to the Astromical Observatory of Cagliari (OAC) and to the Sardinia Radio Telescope (SRT) of the National Institute of Astrophysics ( INAF ). Finally, the Department participates in the National Interuniversity Consortium for Materials Science and Technology (INSTM).

Resources and instrumentations

Experimental and computational research uses instrumentation available in the Department's laboratories, the University service centers and large international laboratories. The departmental instrumental heritage is managed by the individual research groups. In the specific case of the experimental activity in physics of fundamental interactions, there is a close collaboration and interdependence between the departmental laboratories and those of the local INFN section.

The Department has a Mechanical Workshop at the service of research and teaching activities. In addition to the departmental laboratories, the researchers of the Department can benefit, from a shared access facility perspective, from the use of the instrumentation available at the Large Instruments Center (CGS) and the University Research Services Center (CeSAR). The CeSAR, which has its own staff and equipment, has, among other things, the task of providing high-tech scientific equipment, services and consultancy for carrying out the institutional research activities of university staff. With regard to computing infrastructures, the Department, through the management of a departmental Data Processing Center (CED), provides access to network, storage, communication and intensive numerical computing services.
