Abstract

Two examples of combined application of geophysical techniques for the pre-reclamation study of old waste landfills are illustrated. The first example concerns an old mine tailing basin where the gravity, the induced polarization (IP) and the shallow reflection seismology geophysical methods were applied. While the results provided by the IP method were substantially poor, the combination of gravity and reflection seismology proved very effective. The second example concerns a mumicipal solid waste landfill; in this case, much more complicated than the previous one, the gravity method proved effective at least for delineating the borders of the landfill area while seismic data were properly interpreted also based on the result of a shallow excavation.
