Abstract

The article arises from a need to reflect on the traditional cooperation between shepherds in Sardinia, in consequence of a relative lack of historical and anthropological references on a specific form of pastoral contract: cooperation a cumpàngius. Throughout the first half of the twentieth century, this contractual form represented a means through which cooperation between owners of small herds ensured themselves careful control over production, a fair distribution of duties and entitlements, and a relative degree of independence. Comparison of the most important papers by geographers, sociologists, historians and anthropologists have enabled identification of the historical and political premises and the property conceptions that have allowed cooperation a cumpàngius to exist.
