Abstract

The opening of the Olivetti showroom in New York, in the early fifties, is a key moment for the achievement of Italian design in the United States. This study – conducted over bibliographical and documentary sources – traces the history of the concept store within the larger history of the company Olivetti, a corporate identity characterized by aesthetic excellence as well as technological. Special attention is paid to formal and stylistic prerogatives of the showroom as synthesis of architectural planning and artistic inspiration. Finally, reference is made to the presence of the showroom in the social life of the American metropolis.
