Abstract

The article considers the role of William Thomas as a cultural intermediary between England and Italy. Eclectic figure of scholar, traveller and statesman, his pioneering work promoted in Tudor England the study of Italian language and history. His History of Italy (1549) and his Principal Rules of the Italian Grammar (1550) are the first English examples of such works in their respective fields. Thomas was also the first writer to speak about Machiavelli’s political thought in English.
