Abstract

The paper summarizes the history of glass as a building material in the history of architecture, focusing in particular on the great iron and glass buildings in the XIX century; it describes some emblematic examples dating back to 900, from Rationalism to the High Tech Architecture. The paper describes even the developments of the glass made possible by the technological evolution: from the transparent concrete to the glass with variable transparency. Among photodynamic materials, chromogenic ones are very interesting . The paper describes the main features and possibilities of their use in contemporary design practice.
