Abstract

Tourism can generate a negative impact on environment, on communities and on the economy of destinations. Using a case study approach based on a Sardinian destination, this research analyses the potential of public and private practices for sustainable tourism development. For this purpose, the model of tourism developed in the destination has been identified on the base of the indicators suggested by international organizations and literature. The study explores the potential of private management practices, specifically demand management, to reduce the negative effects of tourism seasonality and favour sustainable tourism. The paper observes demand management applied to hotel industry and how it is able to prolong the tourism season and better distributes tourist demand throughout the year. Demand management has the potential to reduce the negative effects of a strong seasonality and can favour the sustainability of tourism in relation to destinations.
